UNSUNG HEROS

September 4, 2001

Yankee back-ups key to 7-6 victory over Jammers

Staten Island, NY – After a season of highlights from John-Ford Griffin, Aaron Rifkin and Shelley Duncan, it was Todd Faulkner, Casey DeGroote and Mitch Evans who were the heros in Tuesday night's game against the Jammers.  Faulkner had the game-winning run, DeGroote had the game-winning RBI and Evans made the game-saving play in the win.

Faulkner, playing right field, had a 3-for-4 night with two runs scored and two RBI.  Casey DeGroote (first base) was 1-for-3, driving in two runs.  Meanwhile, Mitch Evans holding onto a throw by Kevin Thompson from centerfield to nail Jose Salas at the plate ended up being the difference in the one-run game.

Jamestown threatened in the top of the second off of starter Carlos Artiles.  Salas walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a one out walk by Tony Pena.  Kevin Brown struck out for the second out of the inning before Torrey Hambrick singled to right center.  Thompson fielded the ball and fired a strike to Evans, who was plowed by Salas trying to score, but the catcher held on to the ball for the out.

The Yankees responded quickly, putting up one run in their half of the frame.  Faulkner reached on an error to start the inning.  It appeared that he would be stranded at first after Robinson Cano struck out and Andy Cannizaro flied out.  However, Faulkner stole second and came around to score on an RBI single by DeGroote.

Staten Island added one more in the fourth on a solo homerun by Juan Camacho before falling behind 5-2 in the sixth.  With Brian Strelitz in relief of Artiles, Jamestown plated five runs (one earned) on two hits and two errors.

After leaving Faulkner stranded in the bottom of the sixth, the Yankees exploded for five runs of their own in the seventh.  Bernie Castro laid down a bunt single with one out.  After stealing second, Castro scored on a triple by Thompson to put the Yankees to within one.  Griffin walked and Camacho was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Faulkner singled to right to score Thompson.  The Yankees took the lead for good on a two-RBI single by Cano.  Cannizaro was intentionally walked to load the bases before DeGroote drew a walk to score Faulkner, the eventual winning run.

Steve Carlson earned his first victory with the Staten Island Yankees.  He pitched 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and striking out two.  Wes Cooksey pitched the ninth for his first save of the season.
