Staten Island, NY – The Staten Island Yankees’ nine game win streak was halted tonight, as the Pittsfield Astros took game one of the doubleheader, 3-1. The Yankees rebounded, winning game two, 10-1.
The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Todd Faulkner walked, advanced to second on a ground out by Deivi Mendez, reached third on a ground out by Omir Santos, and scored on a single by Kevin Thompson.
The Astros responded by touching starter Jason Arnold for two runs in the top of the sixth. They added one more run in the top of the seventh off of Reggie Laplante to seal the win.
Jason Arnold suffered his first loss of the season, dropping to 7-1. He went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out seven. Russ Rohlicek improved to 2-0. Brandon Wood earned his sixth save of the season.
In game two, the Yankees scored seven runs on four hits, as the Astros pitching staff hit two batters and walked three. Andy Cannizaro scored four runs for the Yankees, as he went 2-for-3 for the night with a double.
Brian Strelitz earned the win, pitching 2.2 innings, walking one and giving up one hit. He struck out three.
The two teams will continue their three-game series tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. John Blankenship (1-0) will face Ernie Sinclair (4-3).
