Staten Island, NY – Former New York Yankees pitcher Dwight Gooden will appear at Opening Day for the Staten Island Yankees on June 24th, 2001 at 6:35 p.m. Gooden will raise the 2000 NY-Penn League Championship banner during the pre-game ceremonies.
Gooden played for the Yankees from 1996-1997 following a standout career with the New York Mets from 1984-1994. After brief stints in Cleveland and Houston, he rejoined the Yankees for the 2000 season. The four-time All-Star won three World Series championships, earning one with the Mets in 1986 and two with the Yankees (1996 and 2000). On May 14, 1996, he pitched the only no-hitter of his career in a 2-0 win over the Seattle Mariners. Gooden was awarded Rookie of the Year honors in 1984, the youngest player ever. He retired from baseball before the 2001 season. During his career, he compiled a 194-112 record, with a 3.51 ERA and 2,293 strikeouts in 15 seasons.
