July 30, 2001

Post Concert Fireworks, Appearance by Mayor Giuliani to Highlight First SI Concert

Staten Island, NY – The Staten Island Yankees announced today that Concert tickets will go on sale beginning Saturday, June 30th at 10 a.m.  Tickets, ranging in price from $12 to $25, may be purchased through the Staten Island Yankee box office, by phone (718-720-YANK or 718-720-9265).  Children 13 years of age or younger receive a 50% discount.

The Armor Artis Chorus and Orchestra, under the direction of Johannes Somary, will perform Handel’s “Royal Fireworks Music” on July 25th, 2001 at 7:30 p.m. at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George on Staten Island, NY.  In celebration of the first ever non-baseball event at the ballpark, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani will participate when he takes the stage to conduct the Anvil Chorus from Verdi’s II Trovatore.

This concert, which is the first in a series of performances hosted by the Staten Island Yankees, will be set to live fireworks against the backdrop of lower Manhattan.  Handel’s famous Royal Fireworks Music has not been performed in its original instrumentation to live choreographed fireworks since it was composed in 1749.  The performance will feature an orchestra and chorus of more than 100 members.  Other compositions to be performed that evening will include operas by Bizet, Verdi and Wagner, as well as orchestral music by Vivaldi, Haydn, Mozart, Sousa and Strauss.

Armor Artis is a chorus and orchestra that balance their programs of well-known favorites with important works rarely heard.  The ensemble has achieved considerable international recognition through its many concerts and recordings.  Somary, Music Director and Founder of Armor Artis, is in his thirty-ninth season with the ensemble.  He has conduced such ensembles as the English Chamber Orchestra, New Orleans Symphony and London’s Royal Philharmonic.  He has participated in international festivals and his discography includes over fifty recordings, including four Stereo Review Record-of-the-Year Awards.
